CANDIDATE FOR MIDDLESEX COUNTY SHERIFF
Kristen Schomburg is running for Sheriff because she believes Middlesex County deserves a leader who has earned that trust — on the streets, in the courtroom, and in the community.
With 25 years of distinguished service in law enforcement, Kristen Schomburg has consistently demonstrated elite leadership and an unwavering dedication to community safety. A graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy (Session 286), a distinction held by less than 1% of law enforcement officers worldwide, she brings a level of strategic expertise and professional excellence that is second to none.
Her extensive background in complex criminal investigations and her proven track record in high-level budget management uniquely position her to lead the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office with fiscal responsibility and operational precision. Throughout her career, Kristen’s commitment to community-focused policing has not only fostered deep public trust but has also earned her numerous commendations and awards for her service and sacrifice.
The Skills & Experience Middlesex County Needs
Proven Leadership
Kristen currently oversees several specialized units, including Patrol, K-9, Animal Services, and Bike Team operations, and is playing a key role in
developing and launching a new Marine Patrol unit. She has previously led the Investigations Division, supervised personnel across multiple shifts,
modernized departmental policies, and built high-performing teams dedicated to delivering results for the community she serves.
Criminal Investigations
Kristen brings more than 15 years of hands-on investigative experience, handling cases ranging from complex death investigations and sexual assault to fraud, narcotics, property crimes, digital forensics, and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC). She is a graduate of the 87th Session of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science Academy. Throughout her career, Kristen has worked closely with federal law enforcement partners, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office to help ensure cases are successfully prosecuted and that victims receive the justice they deserve.
Budget & Fiscal Management
She has extensive experience developing and managing departmental budgets, including reclassifying existing positions, and creating and justifying new roles to secure necessary funding. Kristen maintains a strong focus on fiscal responsibility, balancing the need to equip deputies with the tools and resources they need while ensuring taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and transparently.
Community-First Policing
Kristen believes the Sheriff’s Office should work hand-in-hand with the community, not just respond when called. She is committed to proactive and community policing strategies that emphasize strong community engagement, transparent leadership, and lasting relationships between deputies and the people they serve.
Training & Mentorship
As a certified instructor across multiple disciplines, Kristen is deeply committed to training and mentorship. She has developed specialized training programs and has guided and mentored deputies at every stage of their careers, helping them build the skills, judgment, and professionalism needed to serve the community effectively.
Accountability & Integrity
Throughout her career, Kristen has upheld departmental standards, conducted internal investigations, and evaluated personnel performance with fairness and consistency. She leads with integrity and believes public trust is earned through clear accountability at every level, from the Sheriff to every member of the office.
From Patrol Officer to Proven Leader
Kristen Schomburg didn’t choose law enforcement for a title, she chose it because she wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. For twenty-five years, she has served Virginia communities on the front lines: working assigned patrol areas, investigating crimes, leading specialized units, and mentoring deputies into confident leaders.
Her path took her from public safety work at Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, through the ranks at the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office, and into leadership at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, where she currently serves as a Lieutenant overseeing Special Operations, the K-9 Unit, Bike Team, and Animal Services.
Along the way, she was selected for the FBI National Academy, one of the most prestigious law enforcement leadership programs in the country, reserved for officers who demonstrate exceptional ability and a commitment to the profession. Only a fraction of applicants are accepted.
Over the years, Kristen has been a dedicated advocate for the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office through equipment donations from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office (YPSO), offering specialized training to strengthen deputies’ skills, and enhancing public safety at the Urbanna Oyster Festival event through the support of the YPSO Bike Team.
Why Middlesex County
Kristen has been an resident in Middlesex County for 20 years. This isn’t a career move for her, it’s personal. Someone who has already managed budgets, led investigations, supervised officers, and built trust with communities across Virginia. Someone who will bring that experience home and put it to work for the citizens of Middlesex County from day one.
She has watched this community grow, and she understands the unique challenges that come with protecting a rural county from response times across a wide geographic area to the need for stronger partnerships between law enforcement and the people they serve.
